VCA Animal Hospitals Surgery Lead Veterinary Technician in San Leandro, California

VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists (BAVS) located in San Leandro, CA is looking for a Registered Veterinary Technician to Lead the Surgery/Anesthesia Department.

We are seeking a technician who enjoy challenging and engaging anesthesia cases, have a desire to further their knowledge in the field, and are committed to acting as a leader and a team player. At VCA BAVS, the sense of teamwork and the culture of working together is no less important than the level of medical and surgical care that patients receive. VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) or (Surgery) welcomed, but not required, equivalent experience considered. Those interested in pursuing a VTS in Anesthesia & Analgesia, or Surgery, will be supported.

Required qualifications include Registered (or eligible) Veterinary Technician in California .

Previous experience with companion animal anesthesia (dog/cat), diagnostic imaging, operating room procedures, and post-operative care. Excellent communication skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, specialists, clients, and patients; ability to readily learn new procedures, must be adaptable.

Schedule: Full-time opportunity. Monday – Thursday, 4/10’s

Compensation: Starting at $ 38 – 43 / hour. Pay dependent on licensure and experience.

The skills that will be utilized include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete pre-operative anesthesia planning

  • Calculate drug dosages and administer pre-/induction medications

  • Appropriately intubate and secure the airway

  • Maintenance of an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia with injectable or inhalant anesthetics

  • Display competency in venous catheterization and patient instrumentation

  • Display ability to learn arterial catheterization

  • Knowledge of mechanical ventilator function and demonstrates ability to use ventilators of various types when appropriate

  • Perform or be trained in safe practice of locoregional anesthesia techniques

  • Calculate and deliver constant rate infusions

  • Interpret physiological parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate, end-tidal/inspired CO2, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, body temperature, basic ECG tracings) and decide if intervention is needed for correction. Must be able to communicate with supervising anesthesiologist or veterinarian if parameters are severely abnormal and require intensive intervention

  • Perform basic recovery procedures (extubating, vital parameter monitoring) and to recognize when other interventions are required, such as administration of sedation/analgesia, supplemental oxygen, and intubation

  • Assess pain and perform post-operative pain scoring

  • Perform basic and advanced life support under the supervision of a veterinarian during a CPR event

  • Perform procedural checks and routine cleaning of equipment, report malfunctions

  • Assist is the surgery suite as necessary with cleaning the operating rooms and surgical instruments

  • Follow all radiation safety and OSHA standards

  • Managing client invoices (PVL) and charge for surgery and anesthesia services appropriately

  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records including anesthetic record.

  • Maintain a clean work environment to maintain any infectious disease protocols, handle medical/biomedical and infectious waste appropriately
